Anyone at any age can learn Karate, however at Tiger and Dragon we start our students at the age of 12 so that the lessons are not watered down for children or faint of heart. The style of Karate that we teach is called, Kyokushin and it was designed to make combat short without the use of extensive muscle requirement, therefore many techniques and the gravity of their application are too sensitive for children to understand.
Whether you’ve been injured, have a medical disability, or are currently injured, Karate can help.
Your personal improvement is most important in the pursuit of “The Ulitmate Truth”.
What is Kyokushin?:
Kyokushin translates to – “The Ultimate Truth”
The combonation of two of Japan’s signature Martial Arts; Okinawan Goju Ryu and Shotokan Karate Do.
Kyokushin was developed and spread by Sensei Mas Oyama in the 1970’s with an emphasis on full-contact Karate, which later became the sport of choice for martial artists — before the UFC was ever conceived. These tournaments were bare handed, no holds barred action with the intent on the knock-out.
Kyokushin, although it was developed with the intent for Full-Contact Karate, has continued as its philosophies and principals were founded in total Self-Defense, Self-Discovery, Spiritual Attunement and Physical Training.
Kyokushin is a very spiritual experience. It teaches its students an entirely new way of living your life. Practitioners of Kyukushin find that they become more attuned to one’s self and surroundings – everyday life is enhanced.
Most take Karate to learn to defend themselves but through training they achieve better physical shape and they become at peace with their energy and their environment. This increases success in all aspects of their life including — work, play, relationships and conflicts.
Sensei Kristopher Reed’s Martial Art History:
Kristopher began his training at the age of 12 in American Freestyle Martial Arts.
At 18, he moved to traditional Goju Ryu School and earned his black belt at the age of 20. Before leaving the Goju Ryu School he achieved Ni-Dan.
His training, under Senei Doug Gunn, was true to the old traditions.
Kristopher’s eyes were opened to the dilution of commercialization and the missing elements of “True Martial Arts” as he trained under Chito-Ryu 4th Dan Sensei and Hung Gar Kung Fu Sifu Dave Munn. It seemed that the heart of “True Martial Arts” was being removed in the name of business which thought only of what money could be made.
Through Sensei Munn, Kris met Sensei Gary Cole, a direct descendant of Sensei Richard Kim who was one of few who brought traditional Goju Ryu to America and Canada. Kris trained with him for a year while also training in Aikido, Iido and Jujitsu.
After revitalizing the Kyokushin Kata’s theories and philosophies for two years, Kristopher, with the help of his Sensei’s, began his own school — Tiger and Dragon — in pursuit of “The Ultimate Truth” in the Martial Ways.
